If you really want to get into the festive spirit this year, then why not get away from it all and explore the famous Christmas markets of old Europe? What better way to get into the festive spirit, and avoid the hustle and bustle of the local shops at the same time.
Boasting an unparalleled atmosphere that truly captures the essence of the season, the Christmas markets you will get to visit are bursting with huts and stalls selling all manner of festive goodies. From arts and crafts, hand-made decorations, and scented candles to handcrafted sweets and gluhwein (mulled wine); you’ll find it all at these charming markets.
The great news is that there is now plenty of reputable luxury river cruise lines – like Viking River Cruises, Ama Waterways and Titan – that offer these delightful floating vacations. Available on the Rhine and Danube, these seasonal river trips usually start running in late November, with some going on right up until Christmas itself.
A true festive voyage through Europe, it’s no surprise that these vacations are so sought after. In fact, Viking River Cruises are selling out so quickly; they’ve had to book more for next year. So, if you want to embark on a Yuletide sailing, your best bet really is to book early – this way you’ll get the best pick of the bunch, and some unique gifts that will have your friends and family talking.
Market cruise durations are quite varied. You can choose from short one or two night excursions or treat yourself to a four-night break. Whatever duration you decide on, you’ll still get to stop at all those shopping hot spots.
Now, when it comes to the biggest markets, there are several found in Cologne in the heart of Germany. Divided by the Rhine river, the city’s markets are hugely popular with locals and visitors alike. Or if you’d rather take an adventure down the famous blue Danube, you can look forward to visiting the pretty markets located in Regensburg and Vienna.
You’ll find that your cruise ship itself really gets into the Christmas spirit. You can look forward to seasonally-themed menus, festive entertainment and an array of fun festivities. A festive market cruise really can offer a magical adventure from start to finish.
My Two Favourite Festive River Cruises
First up is Viking River Cruises – they have the most romantic Danube itineraries available. Departing November 6, 13, 20 and 27, and December 4 and 11, Viking River Cruises will travel from Nuremburg to Budapest – or the reverse - visiting Vienna, Melk, Passau, Regensburg and the Main-Danube Canal along the way.
And, of course, you’ll get plenty of shore time put aside so you can get on with your Christmas shopping fix! Lucky passengers can look forward to a superb selection of shore excursions, on-board performances and more.
AmaWaterways is offering wonderful Christmas market voyages on the Danube, Rhine and Moselle, including a seven-night Christmas sailing from Budapest to Nuremberg departing December 20. For a longer duration, there’s the 14-night itinerary from Budapest to Amsterdam, which departs December 20.
Whatever Christmas Market river cruise you opt for, you won’t be disappointed. There’s simply no better way to get stuck into your Christmas shopping in true festive style – whilst getting to see some of Europe’s finest cities and ports of call. Go on… embark on the ultimate Christmas adventure this year!

Brits Sail To Europe For Their Christmas Shopping
Avalon River Cruises have seen a 15% increase in customers booking a Christmas market cruise this festive period.
Avalon River Cruises suggest that the increase in bookings is due to Brits wanting to escape the shopping frenzy which Christmas creates.
A spokesperson for river cruise specialist, Avalon Waterways said: “The trend in Christmas markets has grown significantly because our customers don’t want a stressful shopping experience this year and these markets offer something a little bit different than what you might find in Debenhams.’
Avalon River Cruises are offering sailings through Basel, Switzerland, Strasbourg, Rhine and Germany and guests can enjoy a week exploring traditional Christmas markets and traditional on board Christmas celebrations.
James Cole, Director of Rivervoyages.com said: “Over the past 5 years Christmas shopping in Britain has become a nightmare and with cruise lines such as Avalon River Cruises offering sailings to Europe’s most popular Christmas markets, it really does come as no surprise that customers are looking to go somewhere a little different for their Christmas shopping.’
“A river Christmas market cruise is a great way to see the sights and sound of Europe and discover the origins of Christmas in these quaint towns along the river. The kind of presents that you can purchase from these markets is one of the main attractions, with handicrafts, hand-made candles, and wooden toys to name just a few!”
The river cruise market has risen by 8% since 2009 and popularity continues to grow with river Christmas markets having a direct impact in this growth.
A spokesperson for Avalon Waterways added: “Our Christmas market cruising has been extremely popular this year and it has certainly helped in the growth of the river cruise industry. We have sold so many Christmas market cruises that we have already added more for 2012.”

Dubbed long boats by Viking River Cruises, the ships will show off their transformation in the summer of 2012. As well as being completely refurbished, each of the ships will be renamed after the original Russian explorers, Viking Rurik, Viking Helgi, Viking Ingvar and Viking Truvor – just another way Viking River Cruises are choosing to celebrate their rich Viking heritage by.

Cruise Lines Begin Targeting The Single Cruiser Market
The single cruising market is growing and growing, as more and more cruise lines are recognising the need to cater to their single guests.
Take P & O's new ship Azura for example. Featuring 18 inside and outside single cabins, the Azura’s single cabins resulted in instant demand with solo cruisers. P & O then went on to add a number of single cabins to its other ships Aurora and Oriana.
Other single friendly cruise lines include Fred Olsen (they currently have the largest choice of single cabins); Norwegian Cruise Line who have recently announced new cabins for its single guests; and Viking River Cruises also has a number of single cabins specially designed for the single explorer.
Mal Barritt, director of cruises.com – the world’s largest cruise company – says “This is certainly good news for single cruisers. It would seem that a number of cruise lines are pulling out all the stops for this particular market. The river cruise lines are too. Viking River Cruises have a number of single cabins available for their single guests.
Many cruise lines are making the fee a lot fairer for the single cruiser too. Silversea, for instance, is lowering the extra fare a single traveller must pay to stay in a cabin meant for two people on a number of their upcoming itineraries. In the future we’ll hopefully see single cruisers not having to pay that extra charge with a lot more single cabins being added.”
According to experts in the cruise business, we can expect to see a lot more consideration given to the singles market by other cruise companies in the nearby future.

River Cruises Along The Douro River in Portugal
By far the most enjoyable feature of any river cruise is being able just relax in comfort and watch the world go by. To do this enjoyably though you need three things - great weather, an interesting river and a luxurious ship with an attentive crew like the Douro Spirit. A river cruise along Spain's famous Douro River will give you all of that.
The Douro River, or Duero in Spanish, is around 900 km long from the source in the mountains of Northern Spain to its mouth at Porto.
210 km of the river runs through Portugal and drops through five massive dams making this part of the river the main cruising channel. These dramatic locks limit the size of the ships that can cruise the navigable length, keeping the river nicely quiet so you can enjoy the view better!
May is one of the best times of year to cruise, as you get great weather and daytime temperatures around 24-28° without the scorching summer heat of Portugal.
The river flows strongly through the hillsides of the Douro Valley with their spectacular terraced vineyards, making for some great daytime sightseeing. Many river cruises travel at night, but a trip on the Douro allows you to take in the ever changing river and countryside scenery for the whole trip.
Ships are commonly joined at Vila de Gaia in Porto, the Douro Valley region famous for the port wine, which offers tours of the many cellars in the town. Much of the port in the world starts its journey from Vila de Gaia.
The entire city centre of Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage site and full of interesting architecture, making it a fascinating starting point to your cruise.
One of the distinctive features of the Douro is the massing locks you pass through. The locks are all quite deep and can appear quite scary when the ship is at the lower level with the walls towering above you. The deepest lock in Barragem de Carrapatelo has a lift of 35 metres, requiring some neat navigating by the captain!
There are few major towns along the Douro river stretch in Portugal once the ship has left Porto. In fact the only towns of any size are Peso da Régua and Pinhão.
Most cruises will include a number of shore excursions. From Bitetos it's a short bus ride to the majestic former monastery of Alpendurada e Matos, situated high above the river.
From Peso da Regua you can reach the famous Mateus Palace, near the centre of Vila Real. You might have seen the palace featured on the labels of the well-known Mateus Rose wine. The palace buildings are typical of Portuguese style baroque with many interesting exhibits with lovely gardens.
Pinhão is the midst of the Port Wine country and a short hop to the Quinta do Seixo, a Sandeman vineyard, where you can see first-hand the process of port production and enjoy sampling some of the produce!
Every Douro cruise offers day excursions from Vega de Terron to the Spanish university city of Salamanca. This city dates to Roman times and the Roman-built bridge across the Tormes River still exists.
The huge cathedral dominates the skyline; it is in fact two cathedrals, the Romanesque Old Cathedral and the Gothic New Cathedral. The Plaza Mayor is generally agreed to be the most magnificent main square in Spain and there are many attractive buildings belonging to the University, the oldest in Spain.
Expect your Douro cruise to be a leisurely affair, sailing by day and relaxing at night. There are many enjoyable excursions to be had making it a great destination to spend a week getting away from it all.

Mini Cruises Increase In Popularity
The latest sales figures show that Mini Cruises are increasing in popularity, Cruises.com – the world’s largest cruise company – has revealed.
With Mini cruises departing from the UK to a number of destinations, including Amsterdam, Bruges, Paris, La Rochelle, Cork, Nice, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza and Sicily – sailing from the UK is the convenient option for many. There are over 20 UK ports that cruisers can choose from, including Southampton, Dover, Hull, Newcastle and Liverpool.
Mal Barritt, director of Cruises.com says “There’s such a vast choice of short break cruises available from the UK, so we aren’t at all surprised at the number of bookings we are seeing. If people are wanting to get away this winter, but don’t want to fly, then sailing direct from the UK really is the perfect solution for them. And, with a number of UK ports available, it makes getting away so easy. The holiday can start the second you board.”
“The number of cruise ships that provide these short cruise holidays from the UK continues to grow – along with the demand. This will no doubt lead to even more passengers sailing from British ports in the future. There’s no longer such a need to fly in order to go on holiday, Barritt added.
A large number of cruise lines – like Cunard, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, P&O, Fred Olsen, Silversea and Princess Cruises – all offer short break cruises.
With more and more cruise lines offering mini cruises, it’s expected that the number of bookings will increase even more in 2012.

Brits Escape the Weather This Christmas
Christmas cruises have increased in popularity with 20 per cent of Brits choosing to escape the snow this winter.
North-West based travel firm, Cruise 118 has seen a significant increase in sales during September 2011 with customers booking Christmas cruises.
The significant increase is due to Brits not wanting to spend another Christmas in the snow.
Christmas cruiser, Mary Croft, 54 from Staffordshire said: “The weather last year was so unexpected and so bitterly cold that I couldn’t face another Christmas in the UK.”
Cruise 118 Director James Cole said: “Christmas cruises are definitely becoming the new trend and with places like the Caribbean offering all year round sunshine, it’s no wonder our bookers want to get away from the cold British weather and celebrate Christmas somewhere warmer.”
“The cruise lines really do pull out all the stops during the festive season as well, with Christmas celebrations like you wouldn’t believe. I think our customers like the fact that they don’t have to organise all the food and drink and can celebrate with family and friends, whilst in an exotic destination.”
Cruise 118 Director Mal Barritt said: “The figures really speak for themselves. Christmas abroad is extremely popular and this has helped in the growth of cruise 118 and the cruise industry as a whole.”
It would seem that the cruise industry has not been affected by the credit crunch as the cruise industry on a whole has doubled over the last 10 years with Brits estimated to take a record 2 million cruises by 2014 and 25 per cent of these choosing to take their cruise during winter.
